FDA Deems Vagus Nerve Therapy Approvable as a Treatment for Depression

By Charles Donovan On February 3, 2005 the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) notified the manufacturer of the vagus nerve stimulator (Cyberonics, Inc.) that it had deemed its VNS Therapy System approvable as a long-term adjunctive treatment for patients over the age of 18 with chronic or recurrent treatment-resistant depression in a major depressive episode that has not responded to at least four adequate antidepressant treatments. In the approvable letter received today by Cyberonics, FDA indicated that final approval was conditional on final labeling, final protocols for a post-approval dosing optimization study and patient registry. This is an extraordinary announcement and major step for the four million Americans suffering from chronic or treatment-resistant depression towards providing an FDA-approved, informatively labeled, long-term treatment option specifically for their lifelong and life-threatening illness. The FDA is reviewing the final labeling, which includes the Physicians and Patients Manuals, and expects to complete that review in a timely manner. When all of the FDAs conditions have been satisfied, the Company plans a formal launch in conjunction with the American Psychiatric Association Annual Meeting in May. You need to be your own best advocate and educate yourself about how this remarkable FDA approved therapy can change your life. Gone Night Fishing: Things to Have in Mind

By Robbie Darmona Night fishing is a serious challenge even to experienced fishermen. It is getting more and more popular these days, especially on lake Taneycomo and other lakes where the water stream is not so dangerous. Night fishing is also popular on riverbanks. There are several basic things you need to know before attempting to go night fishing. To fly a fish at night is not as easy as it may seem to the uninitiated. First things first. Before going out with your flyfishing enthusiasm in the middle of the night, youd better have checked the water area during the day. Carefully examine the bank and the lay of water. Although it may seem knee-deep on most places, there are exceptionally deep drop-offs, riffles and holes where you may get stuck in the dark. To reduce the risk of drowning, be very careful not to go far away in the water. Wade only to the level of your calves, not more, unless you are very experienced or you know the area like your palm. When night fishing, you should take your waders with you, they are perfect for the muddy conditions which you have to overcome. The thing to have in mind about your waders is not to let any water in. Hypothermia is not an option, but will inevitably come if you stay with wet legs for several hours, waiting for the trout to peck. Another thing goes: be cautious enough to take your cell phone with you, so that you can phone whenever you like if a problem occurs. If the current is very strong, youd better not try night fishing by yourself. The water stream can be quite dangerous at night, and if you are on yourself things may go fatal. A great number of fishermen follow the above-mentioned instructions, hoping for a good catch, but still the fish is silent. What can be the reason? First and foremost, the weather conditions. Night fly fishing requires dark and moonless nights for the trout to come up. Night fishing on rainy weather can be profitable for some fishermen, because the sky is cloudy and there is no moonlight. Another question of interest is on how long intervals the trout is feeding. It comes up usually for half an hour, in between two hours periods of silence. But the meal-time can be different and you have to be careful and attentive all night. What about the bait? Anything is possible, the choice is yours. Flies from small nymphs to bigger Woolies can be substantial. It depends on the weather conditions, and also on the trouts appetite. Bearing in mind these suggestions, you may soon fall in love with night fly fishing. It is not just a fishing occupation, it is a great adventure, a dark time to muse and enjoy nature. Adword Tips

By Frederik Deglande Adwords is in internet marketers dream that has come true. With only a few dollars and a single ad you can have your first sale in less then an hour. But the problem is most people are paying to much to join the adwords game. Did you know that some of your competitors are paying less than you and getting more signups and sales. I would like to give 5 tips that will boost your adsense campaign for sure. 1) Target your keywords. It comes always to my attention that people dont target their keywords. The more target your visitors are the more likely they will buy. For example poker is not a target keyword. Perhaps the searcher is looking for poker handbooks, poker forums, poker software, poker tips. Lets say you want to sell a poker guide, it can be yours but you can also pick up some guide written by someone else for example on clickbank. You earn a commission of the sales. Poker gives us 2 pages of sponsored ads, poker course, poker guide or poker ebook gives us only a handful (or less) ads on Google. Result you will pay less and have a better conversation ratio. 2) Include a price in your ads. I never set up a campaign and probably I never will where I dont include a price in my ads. At this point the members who read your ads say, o no, this product is to much I dont buy it. And mostly they dont click your ads. Warning! You will get a lower ctr but a higher conversation ratio. 3) Turn off content targeting and search market. I know not much adsense users are happy to hear this (and Im also one of them) however my advice is. Turn of content targeting and search market. I can tell you from my own experience that you will get a better ctr and conversation ratio with your Google adwords if you advertise only on Google itself. 4) Dont forget to geotarget. Lets say you have found out a great affiliate network that sends playstation portables to the users of Canada and the USA. Well I assurance you only include Canada and USA in your campaign. No matter how much visitors you have, if they arent from Canada and the USA you wont earn any money. 5) Usa a call to action. I would recommend you in the last phrase of your ad, use a call to action. Yes you dont have much space with adwords, therefore use it wisely. An example can be. - 15% discount act now - Download now before your competition does. - Steal it now. - Dont wait, but use it. I hope you have learned something from this adwords tips. Energy Medicine - Clearing Your Energies - Affirmatins and Gratitude

By KG Stiles Develop a 5-minute practice twice daily for clearing your energies. Envision yourself being in the flow, your flow. Concentrate your mind to scan your bodymind and release any tension with your breath. This simple practice will enhance your ability to focus and manage your energy system. You will release stress and reprogram your habits of mind, or attitudes. Engaging your body daily through various forms of movement and exercise will further enhance your ability to focus and help establish new, healthier emotional patterns. There are many techniques you can use; the following are only a few suggestions: 1. Daily Affirmations. First thing in the morning on rising begin by affirming your intention for the day. An example of an affirmation Ive used with outstanding results is, I love life, or I love you, while gently tapping the center of your chest. This stimulates your Thymus gland and supports your immune response and feelings of self love. Remember for affirmations to be effective they must be phrased in the present tense, be positive, and personal. 2. Give thanks. Nurturing your attitude of gratefulness is all important. Naming all the things you are grateful for will multiply your results. An example might be, I am grateful to be alive. The law of concentration states that whatever you focus on will manifest. Lose Weight Permanently With the Power Pause

By Janice Elizabeth Small If strict diet and exercise routines are not for you and just make you feel like a failure because you don’t seem to be able to keep them up, then why not try a new approach? Start with something you know you can do, which needs no special equipment and which you can do anywhere. This is something which is so powerful, so simple it will serve you all your life. I call it a “Power Pause” because it means using a moment to regain power over your decisions about what and when you eat. To make the “Power Pause” part of your life ask yourself just 3 questions before you eat anything * Am I physically hungry right now or could I wait? * How will I feel after I have eaten this? * Is there a better choice? The Power Pause is a tool you can use whenever you’re faced with food. You can use it before you buy food in a restaurant or shop. And you can use it before you open the fridge or freezer, before you reach into the cupboard for a snack, before you have a second cookie. You can even use it during a meal to help you think about whether you have eaten enough. Use it to remind yourself to stop eating whether or not there is food left on your plate or on the table. It simply helps you avoid eating when you’re not hungry. We all tend to eat food without thinking. We see food, we eat it. We get offered food, we accept it. We pass a burger bar. We suddenly feel “hungry”, go in and order. We anesthetize our minds with food when we’re upset. We hardly notice the food going in. And eating food without needing it is the primary cause of our weight problems. We eat and eat without thinking whether we’re hungry right now or whether that food is the best choice we can make for our bodies and our health. We eat without thinking about our desire to look good on the beach this year, to do something about our threatening health problems, to feel good about ourselves. But what does it take to pause for a moment before you make a decision to put food in your mouth, to think twice before you add those calories to your hips? A few seconds at most! Certainly less time than you will spend regretting your bout of over-eating. You may not succeed in stopping yourself every time especially at the beginning of using this tool - so don’t look for perfection from yourself - look for progress. Keep going because it will eventually become second nature - a habit for the rest of your life - one which will help you stay slim forever. Pharmacy Tech School

By Clark Hunter Attending pharmacy tech school is something that most people find very rewarding. Whether you are just out of high school or if you have been in the job market for awhile, making strides toward being a pharmacy tech is very exciting. This is a career that can take you to places all around the world; because it doesnt matter where you go people are in need of pharmaceuticals. A pharmacy tech can get his or her education and then choose to live just about anywhere in the world; there are not many jobs that are that versatile. Choosing a Pharmacy Tech School If you have decided that you want to become a pharmacy tech you need to choose the school that you would like to attend. If you are lucky the university closest to your home has a complete program that you will be able to attend in just a couple years time. If you dont have a university in your area you should definitely check with your local community college. Many community colleges have great pharmacy tech programs that can get you in and out of there in record time. Community colleges are also beneficial because they are typically cheaper than universities but provide an education that is just as good. Perhaps you know you want to attend pharmacy tech school but you cannot fit the classes into your current work schedule. If this is the case you shouldnt give up on your dream to be a pharmacy tech. First, see if you can change your schedule around a little bit and see if you have an accelerated pace university in your area that will only require that you attend classes once a week or even once a month. If you still cannot pull this off why not check out some of the online pharmacy tech schools? There are quite a few of them popping up and they will allow you to fit your education in when it is convenient for you. Attending a Pharmacy Tech School Pharmacy tech school is known for being difficult, so dont psych yourself out by going into the educational process thinking that you wont be able to do well. While the work is difficult it is not impossible. You will probably have to work harder at some things than others, but if you push through you will find that you can do it. Remember when you get frustrated that anything worth doing is difficult. Pharmacy tech school is a process and you will build education upon education so that when you are done with the program you have all the information you need to get the job done. Ensuring that you attend all of your classes will generally help you from getting overwhelmed or feeling as though you do not have all of the information that you need. If you are going to a traditional university or community college you should be sure that you attend all of your classes, and if you cannot be there hook up with a classmate to borrow their notes. If you feel as though you are not getting the material being presented ask if you can meet your professor after hours or get involved in a tutoring program. You cannot take your education too seriously and if you dont understand one facet of the education it is possible that you will be lost from there on out. If you are attending an online pharmacy tech school you should be sure that you do your work as instructed. It can be really easy to get behind when you attend online schools because there is so little accountability. If you get behind be sure that you take your time to get caught up and dont hurry through any of the material. If you hurry through material you are likely to miss vital information, making future lessons more difficult to understand. The best idea is to come up with a plan of action for yourself and stick with it so that you can get all of the material completed online and in a very complete manner. Life after Pharmacy Tech School You might want to established connections throughout your schooling so that you have an easier job securing a job after you complete the pharmacy tech program. You can offer to work as a cashier at your local pharmacy so that you can ease right into a pharmacy tech position after you complete the program. If you would like to work for a hospital or insurance company, see if you can get into the company or facility before hand in another capacity so that you can more easily fit into a tech role later on. Its never too soon to start making connections in the pharmacy world, so start forming connections now to make getting a job easier! Caring For Your Ground Covers

By Robert Gettle Care and planting requirements for ground cover are similar to that of a flower bed. Add as much organic matter to the soil as possible and lime if needed. In open areas you can rototill or work amendments well into the soil. Under trees or shrubs add it to the planting holes only so as not to disturb the existing plants roots. Spread it between the holes as mulch. The distance to plant depends on the plants growth habits. The closer you plant the sooner the area will fill in. Information as to how fast a ground cover spreads is printed on the label. Usually how many plants you buy depends on your budget or how long you are willing to wait for the plants to spread naturally and cover the area. Take ajuga for example the label says plant 12-15 inches apart. If the area you wish to cover is 1 1/2 by 5 feet you could get 5 plants and put in 12” apart down the center. In a couple of years you will have complete coverage. Or buy 10 plants place randomly and by the end of the season you will have nice coverage. Most ground covers can be planted 6 deep, but it is best to check the label. Most ground covers should be planted in spring or fall. Remove dead flowers to keep plants nice and keep them blooming. Water and feed as you would a flower bed. Disease or pests are normally not a problem with ground covers. Try ground cover as a low maintenance alternative to lawn grass. Once they are established ground covers are usually maintenance free. they conserve moisture and choke out weds like mulch so other plants can thrive. Ground cover are particularly for sloped areas that can be difficult to reach and maintain. After becoming rooted they spread until they fill in the area. Battling the Blues and Winning

By Leigh Erin Connealy Summer time is over, the kids are back in school and soon the holiday preparations will begin. But unfortunately, what should be a magical time of year, all too often signals the beginning of the winter blues for millions of Americans. And whether you suffer from a mild form of depression when it comes time to start your holiday shopping, or you go into full blown panic attacks at the mere mention of hosting Thanksgiving dinner, you are not alone. The good news is that, while the changing of the seasons is inevitable, the holiday blues dont have to be. Depression seems to be the catch phrase of the new millennium and the health care community is often all too quick to prescribe antidepressants as a cure to what ails you. But not all forms of depression and anxiety warrant such drastic measures. Often times, with a few changes to your diet and lifestyle, you could be looking at the world with a whole new attitude. Understanding the Evils of Depression and Anxiety Weve all said it at one time or another, those words that seem to sum up our angst so perfectly: Im so depressed! But what does that mean exactly? The symptoms of depression can be characterized by many factors, ranging from irritability and insomnia to panic and the inability to enjoy lifes little pleasures. Often times we strive towards perfection in an effort to manage our feelings of despair or inadequacy, generally falling short and leaving us feeling worse than we when we began. Many of us were raised on the old adage, Mind Over Matter, and feel that we should be able to manage our emotions on our own, that anything less would be a sign of weakness or failure. Not true! This method of thinking is outdated and most often ineffective, as the culprit in depression is generally not a weak will, but rather a reduced level of an important brain chemical called serotonin. Serotonin is the bodys primary defense against anxiety and depression. When our serotonin levels are low, we tend to lose our natural good nature and find that lifes challenges become increasingly more daunting. There are many reasons why your serotonin may be low, genetics often times being a key factor. Does depression seem to run in your family? Did your parents have a difficult time facing the day to day stresses that seemed so easy for others? Is there a history of alcoholism or drug abuse in your family? These are all signs that low serotonin might be present. Dont be discouraged if this is the case, though. As you will see, genetics do not mean a life sentence of depression. There is hope. Stress can also be a contributing factor to depression. Have you experienced elevated levels of stress over an extended period of time? Whether the stress is the result of a major tragedy in your life, like the loss of loved one or the difficulty of a bitter divorce, or the result of a lengthy or debilitating illness, the effects on your body are the same. Under attack by such stressors, your serotonin store is tapped into repeatedly which can eventually lead to total serotonin depletion, leaving you running on a perpetual state of empty. Believe it or not, but the time of the year may also have a very real affect on your mood. Do you find that your mood seems to drop when the weather is cloudy, or the sun doesnt come out for days on end? There is a biological explanation for this. Serotonin is one of the few body chemicals that are actually stimulated by light. An underexposure to light can lower your serotonin production, leaving you feeling down and depressed. And if you are already running on low levels of serotonin, something as minor as a cloudy day can serve to bring you further down. A major contributor to depression, and the one most often overlooked, is your diet. In order for your body to produce serotonin it relies on the foods that you eat to provide the much needed amino acid, Tryptophan. Tryptophan can be found in high-protein animal-derived foods such as turkey, chicken, beef and cheese. Once ingested, your body converts the amino acid, tryptophan, into a chemical called 5-HTP (5 hydroxytriptophan) and then into the neuro-transmitter, serotonin. Without tryptophan, your body is unable to produce 5-HTP and subsequently serotonin, leading to a myriad of problems, most notably, depression. There are four key symptoms that could indicate the presence of low levels of serotonin: Gut and Heart Problems 90% of the serotonin in your body is in your gut and when you raise your serotonin levels your digestive tension (including constipation) can often dissolve with your depression. Your heart is also partly serotonin dependant. Its well known that low serotonin type negative moods, including fear and anger, are closely associated with heart disease. Sleep Disturbance Many people with low serotonin levels obsess and worry instead of getting to sleep, while others tend to wake up too early in the morning. Fibromyalgia, TMJ, Migraines Raising serotonin levels not only has a powerful muscle relaxing effect, it can also stimulate our natural pain killers, the endorphins. Cravings for Carbs and Alcohol Ingesting carbohydrates (whether through food or alcohol) can set off body wide stress, causing your pancreas to release insulin in order to remove the excess carbs from your bloodstream and store them as fat. The insulin sweeps most of the amino acids out of your bloodstream, along with the carbs. Only one amino gets left behind-tryptophan-and it goes right into your brain, unimpeded by the other aminos that usually crowd it. Once in the brain, the tryptophan can easily convert to 5HTP and then to serotonin, elevating your mood temporarily. The downside? This source of instant euphoria most often leads to a dependency on sugary foods which can in turn lead to excess weight gain along with a myriad of other health problems. Turning the Corner to Peace and Happiness The treatment of depression may take some time but it can be accomplished. And while your mood may not improve right away, dont let this discourage you. Counseling can often be an effective tool in coping with depression and anxiety. By adopting valuable problem solving skills you can begin to regain control and achieve happiness in your life. Learning to recognize and accept your feelings, even feelings of sadness, anger or fear is an important first step. One of the most important treatments for depression is exercise. When you exercise, your body seeks out the amino acids in your bloodstream for routine muscle repair. This causes tryptophan, the only amino acid not used for muscle repair, to go straight to the brain. Once it gets there, it is quickly converted to 5HTP and then to serotonin. Exercise also increases your oxygen intake which is critical to the formation of serotonin from amino acids. The amount of exercise needed to fight depression is not much and even a small amount of exercise has been shown to enhance the powerful mood elevating substances in the brain known as endorphins. When the endorphins are elevated, our mood improves. Physical exercise is a very safe and natural antidepressant, perhaps the most effective natural antidepressant available. The presence of food allergies is a very significant factor to consider as a cause of depression. Food allergies often times play a major role with people who suffer from depression. A simple food allergy test could reveal whether or not you are experiencing the effects of this common problem. Hypoglycemia, the result of a dysfunctional sugar metabolism, is a common but often unrecognized cause of depression. The brain doesnt function properly when the sugar levels in our body are low, creating symptoms such as depression, irritability, anxiety, fatigue and headaches. A dietary intervention consisting of a proper balance of protein, carbohydrates and fats could completely alleviate this problem. Our bodies are put under a lot of stress from consuming too much alcohol and caffeine and the natural production of serotonin is inhibited by such chemicals. Alcohol is a brain depressant that disrupts the normal sleep cycles and interferes with the many brain cell processes. Individuals who are prone to feeling depressed seem to also be especially sensitive to caffeine. Drinking too much caffeine can lead to all of the common symptoms of depression. Just by cutting down on, or eliminating all together, these two addictive chemicals, you could see a dramatic difference in your mood. Proper levels of calcium, magnesium, vitamin D and B vitamins are needed to ensure the conversion of tryptophan to 5HTP to serotonin. Although it is difficult to diagnose, there is evidence that vitamin deficiency tremendously affects our health and can cause fatigue or a general lack of well being. Individuals with depression have often been found to be deficient in folic acid, B12 and B6. Also, very importantly, a deficiency in essential fatty acids (the omega 3 oils) has recently been linked to depression. When I evaluate a patient for depression and/or anxiety, it is important that I gain a complete understanding of all of their symptoms along with their physical state of well being. There can be several physiological causes of depression, including chronic disease, low adrenal function, heavy metal toxicity, PMS, menopause, hypothyroidism and more. By determining the underlying cause of the depression and/or anxiety, the proper illness can be treated, which should subsequently ease the patients emotional unrest. The drug Prozac, and medications similar to it, have become big sellers, generating over $2 billion in sales annually. However, it is doubtful that 20th century Americans have suddenly developed a Prozac deficiency. Before I place my patients on medication that could have both short and long term side effects, I begin with one of the many natural treatments that are available, such as tryptophan, tyrosine, phenylalanine or melatonin. I do sometimes find that the use of amino acids along with a low dose of an antidepressant medication may also be beneficial to the patient. When people are depressed, they are often times unaware that their behavior has changed. If other people have noticed a change in your outlook, consider whether or not you might be suffering from depression. If it is possible, try adjusting your diet and adding approximately 20 minutes of exercise 3 days a week to your regular routine. If your depression is too severe to be affected by these adjustments, please seek the professional help that you need to start the healing process. Depression is a very real disease and one that can be treated with the proper assistance. Dont be held down by the weight of its symptoms any longer than you have to be. Solutions are out there and everyone deserves to live a happy, healthy and full life. Do it for yourself. Do it for your family. Do it for the holidays. LEIGH ERIN CONNEALY, M.D., M.P.H. received a Masters in Public Health from the University of Texas and her M.D. from the University of Chicago. She did her postgraduate training in family practice at Harbor/UCLA Medical Center in Los Angeles, California. Dr. Connealy began practicing medicine in 1986. More and more of her patients started asking about alternative treatments and this prompted her to learn everything she could about nontoxic protocols. In 1992, she founded the South Coast Medical Center for New Medicine in Tustin, California, where she serves as Medical Director. Dating Without Spending

By Martin Lukac Sometimes the best things in life are free. Looking back, some of the best dates I ever went on didn’t cost anything at all. Dating is expensive. You’ve got dinner, which can easily be $40 at the cheapest. Then, you have a movie, which can run another $40 if you buy drinks and candy. That’s an $80 evening. Before you know it, a weekend can easily cost you all of your extra money for the month. But it doesn’t have to cost so much. The best thing is that often, romance isn’t expensive. An afternoon spent fishing. A picnic overlooking the ocean. A afternoon hike through the forest. These are wonderful dates, and they don’t cost you anything. Here are some more ideas: An evening spent quietly at home. Cook dinner together. You can make it an adventure and try all new recipes. Watch movies, play a board game or just gaze into a warm fire. Visit a local festival or art fair. Many towns and communities have local events, especially in the summer. It’s a good opportunity to experience good food, entertainment and the outdoors. Go camping. Many campgrounds offer free setups for tents. Spend the evening under the stars. Make smores and relax by the fire. Listen to the crickets. Sometimes the best dates aren’t those that you spend a lot of money on. Some time and thought is what it really takes to wow a date. Anyone can spend money on dinner and a movie, but it is truly unique to for someone to make a date to go to the farmer’s market and pick out fresh produce for dinner. First dates are sometimes a little tense. Dispense with the usual first-date feelings with a more relaxed atmosphere. Instead of the traditional Friday night first date, why not a Sunday afternoon stroll through the park? Or a Saturday afternoon ball game? Think about ways to take the formality out of the situation. But make sure that you look for activities where you can get to know each other — that’s what the first date is for. The possibilities are endless. Once you get to know someone, you will find many different inexpensive date ideas. Even married couples can take advantage of frugal dating. For example, my husband and I take our baby daughter with us to the drive-in movie. She falls asleep in her carseat, we save the cost of a babysitter and we pack a picnic to eat during the movie. Sometimes we just get sodas and go drive around. We get to spend time together without spending much money or having to worry about a babysitter. It’s great. A date isn’t just dinner, it is spending time together. When you take the time to find unique ways to spend time together, that time becomes special. Take turns planning dates. You could try something new together or do the same thing every weekend. What really matters isn’t the money you spend, it’s the time. Have fun!
